Meditation and a “blue sky mind”

Meditating is something I have played with off and on through out my life. When I was in graduate school studying drama, after each acting class took place, I would rush out of the room, and go to my apartment and stare straight ahead. I used to joke with my friends that I needed to just chill and stare at the atoms in front of my face. The class was very intense with many big emotions and a lot of passion. Leaving that room, and sitting quietly in my apartment was my way of washing off of the psychic debris of the class.

Baron Baptiste in his Journey into Power recommends sitting quietly for at least ten minutes every morning, with a straight spine and your hands in a prayer position. He recommended paying attention to your inhale and exhale, and looking with your third eye, your seat of intuition. Listening to the sounds around you and observing your thoughts helps to cultivate a “ blue sky mind”.

Four times a year Oprah and Deepak Chopra do a 21 day free meditation series and I usually do that. It is a guided meditation, and I find it a great experience. It certainly gives my day a focus, and allows me to slow my reaction time.
I often lie down to meditation, I love stretching out my spine. I think I will try a more formal meditation seat and schedule.

Living in a household with a lot of other people I struggle sometimes with taking time for myself. I notice that I wake up happy and ready to experience a fresh day, but that by the late afternoon I feel the need for meditation more. My days can get me feeling like a top that has been wound to tight and some rest and relaxation feels like a total reset. An opportunity to come back to living from the outside in.

The idea of a “blue sky mind” is so refreshing, and just might be the phrase that turns me into a dedicated meditator!
